I like the idea, its not really simplifying the game, in fact it means you have to spend more time setting up your team. It just means that it gives you more control over your team.

This feature would have been most useful, however with the addition of the friendly pool, all my friendlies are accepted normally within about 30mins.

By reducing the contract lengths from 5 to 3 years this was an attempt to increase player salaries. It has worked.
