New Message Alert Tool

my idea: a small program (permanently logged-in should be an option) in my desktop toolbar that gives me an alert when I receive a new SP private message. This would be extremely useful for me and all other addicted managers. It would keep us from logging-in every 5 minutes to check for updates

That would be helpful, but the question i'm having is, would it have to be developed by the dev team (then it might take a while since there are probably more urgent matters) or would a third party programmer be able to make it?
Maybe SP could implement an RSS feed wich keeps you informed of your messages or results? I'm not a programmer so i don't know how much work this involves or if it even can be done, but the idea just crossed my mind.
