Player Skills Description in Help/Rules section

Post by daniel_texan »

This suggestion is not related to game development or programming, it is about the help/rules, which can be rewritten easily and hence implemented with no pain, if the suggestion is acceptable.

Following is the current description of player skills in Help->Rule:

* All players:
o Experience : Players gain experience by playing matches.
o Stamina : Depending on his stamina, a player will recover faster. This means his fitness will not drop as fast as other players' fitness.
o Speed : How fast a player can run.
o Ballcontrol : How well a player can handle a ball.
* Keepers:
o Courage : Keepers have to be brave.
o Flexibility : Flexibility is important for a keeper.
o Jumping : Juming is an elementary quality for keepers.
o Goalkicks : Important for bringing the ball back in to play.
o Play along : A keeper has to be able to play some soccer too.
o Reflex : Reacting fast is a necessity for a keeper.
* Field players:
o Passing : Passing the ball is of course very important.
o Shooting : Necessary for making goals.
o Play it out : The ability to choose a good solution for passing the ball to a teammate after an opponent's attack has been stranded.
o Strength : Strength is needed to win some duels with opponents.
o Heading : Heading is most important for defenders and forwards.
o Tackling : This is of course more important for defenders.
o Playmaking : Your midfielders have to be able to create some fine combinations.
o Insight : The ability to read a soccer match.
The description of those skills written in italics above really need to be a little more detailed. Most of them have a description saying 'the skill is necessary or important'. It doesn't tell you what that skill is for or how that skill is brought into the game, how a player uses that particular skill during the match to score a goal, or clear with head/tackle, or to pass the ball successfully assisting a goal or run through the defense with speed or dribble the ball past 2-3 defenders with excellent ball control, or have stamina and speed to sweep the mid field area from attack to defense..

Yes, the match report is where you will find this kinda stuff. Why not include it in help so the managers think about the actual gameplay and the individual orders become more challenging ? It will also make managers think how and which skills they should train other than 2 basic skills. Managers will read the match report more carefully to find out how their strategies are working and how the players are using a particular skill.

Main emphasize of this post is, to establish a connection between the what is written in help/rules and how the game is played(match report).

I have tried to suggest a different, more interesting and detailed description in following quote, written in bold type, which can be added to the current description. Please feel free to comment with your opinions:

* All players:
o Experience : Players gain experience by playing matches. Experience makes player perform consistently.

o Stamina : Depending on his stamina, a player will recover faster. This means his fitness will not drop as fast as other players' fitness. A high stamina helps a player with high speed to cover a lot of ground. Also, higher the stamina of your players, more chance of scoring goals or not conceding many during the second half of the match.

o Speed : How fast a player can run. High speed can be useful to counterattack, to get to the ball while defending or heading to clear danger or to get back to the defensive position once the possession of ball is lost. Low speed can be useful as well in a way that a player doesn't leave his position often.

o Ballcontroll : How well a player can handle a ball. A player with excellent ball control will not lose ball more often or can create a great scoring opportunity for a header goal with a long pass from deep defensive or wing position. Such player can get past 2-3 opponent players dribbling the ball.

* Keepers:
o Courage : Keepers have to be brave. Courage decides how successfully the keeper can leave his area to get to the attacker and snatch the ball. Or reach to the ball to clear it away during a corner.

o Flexibility : Flexibility is important for a keeper. :?: I am not sure about what this skill does.

o Jumping : Jumping is an elementary quality for keepers.Extremely useful when defending a freekick/penalty/corner, as well as clearing away the shots from outside penalty area.

o Goalkicks : Important for bringing the ball back in to play.How successfully a keeper can deliver/clear ball to his teammate in opponent's area.

o Play along : A keeper has to be able to play some soccer too.The ability to pass and receive the ball successfully to/from the defenders/midfielders and start an attack or keep the possession.

o Reflex : Reacting fast is a necessity for a keeper. A keeper with high reflexes can react successfully to a close range shot or a freekick/penalty, or a strong/quick long range shot.

* Field players:
o Passing : Passing the ball is of course very important.A player's ability to create short or long passes to his teammates successfully, without his pass getting crossed by opponent and to keep the possession of the ball. A high passing skill is a must for all midfielders, but it can be useful for defenders to create counterattacks, and also for forwards to create goal assist opportunities.

o Shooting : Necessary for making goals. A player with high shooting skill will score more often and successfully. It is a necessary skill for forwards, but an attacking midfielder with high shooting skill can win you a match too.

o Play it out : The ability to choose a good solution for passing the ball to a teammate after an opponent's attack has been stranded.

o Strength : Strength is needed to win some duels with opponents.A center back with high strength can easily snatch the ball from an attacker and also get to the ball with force while clearing with a header, or defending during a corner. A high strength forward can force his way into the penalty area with ease.

o Heading : Heading is most important for defenders and forwards. Essential skill during a corner for players to score a goal with a header, as well as to defend by clearing with a header. A forward with high heading skill has more chance of scoring a goal from a deep, long cross from his teammates.

o Tackling : This is of course more important for defenders. A must skill for defenders, but also important for defensive midfielders to get back the possession of ball. A forward with some tackling skill can get past the defense as well.

o Playmaking : Your midfielders have to be able to create some fine combinations.

o Insight : The ability to read a soccer match. A high insight skill can help the player to read the tactics of your teammates, so he can respond quickly and successfully to a pass, or run quickly to be in right position, or create an assist.
